چکیده

The acronym PABITRA stands for Pacifi c-Asia Biodiversity Transect. PABITRA is a fl exible design of a transect system that connects a number of island areas in the tropical Pacifi c (i.e. Oceania) into a network of sites as living landscapes. The sites include upland/ inland forests, agro-ecosystems, and coastal habitats with coral reefs, which on islands are close together and interconnected by a number of physical and social parameters. PABITRA is also a network of people concerned with the conservation of island ecosystems and their sustainable production and services. PABITRA is organized and coordinated by a group of conservation scientists. It is a program of the Pacifi c Science Association (PSA) Ecosystem Division in the Task Force of Biodiversity (TFB).

Biodiversity Assessment of Tropical Island Ecosystems

In tropical countries, upland forests, mid-elevation and lowland agriculture and coastal zones used to provide most if not all of the goods and services that local populations relied on for their livelihood. The forests provided necessary building materials as well as supplies for boat construction, and a host of food products and medicinal plants. The lowland areas provided all agricultural st...

creased to about 100 species as more fieldwork was conducted (Brown et al. 2001). A similar situation exists in the reptile groups. On a week's fieldwork in a western Mindanao tropical rain forest, our group collected a new species of arboreal skink. To a lesser degree, the mammals are in a similar situation as the amphibians and the reptiles. Biodiversity research at the population or communit...

Marine Soundscape Ecology

In the face of accelerated climate change, monitoring biodiversity has become a critical task for ecologists. Habitat loss is occurring at an alarming rate both in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, resulting in endangerment and extinction of species up to 1,000 times faster than natural rates. However, traditional biodiversity measurements are logistically and financially difficult, making bio...
